3 killed in Habiganj road crash

At least three day labourers were killed and another one critically injured as a goods-laden truck ran over them on Dhaka-Sylhet highway at Nabiganj upazila in Habiganj this morning.

Of the deceased, two were identified as Maharram Ali, 50, and Manik Mia, 39, hailing from Habiganj Sadar upazila, reports our Habiganj correspondent quoting Abdul Baten, officer-in-charge of Nabiganj Police Station.

A Dhaka-bound goods laden truck from Sylhet hit the day-labourers from behind when they were engaged in repairing works on the highway in Aushkandi area around 9:00am, leaving three labourers spot dead and one injured, the OC said.

The injured is being treated at a local clinic where his condition is stated to be critical, the OC added.

On information, police rushed to the spot and seized the truck and detained its driver.

Following the accident, the day-labourers and locals blocked the Dhaka-Sylhet highway causing huge traffic jam on the route, said Nurun Nabi, officer-in-charge Sherpur Highway Police.

The bodies were taken to the Nabiganj Police Station.
