Myanmar ‘drug smuggler’ killed in ‘gunfight’ with BGB

A female “drug smuggler” from Myanmar was killed and four others injured in a “gunfight” with Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) in Teknaf upazila of Cox’s Bazar early today.

The deceased was identified as Zahuda Begum, 60, wife of Kalu Mia of Udong village in Myanmar’s Mongdu, reports our Cox’s Bazar correspondent quoting BGB.

A Bangladesh man, Md Shafiq, 27, of Shah Porir Dwip, was also arrested unhurt, said Lt Col Abuzar Al Zahid, BGB’s Cox’s Bazar battalion chief.

Acting on secret information, a BGB team took position at Golarchar in Shah Porir Dwip last midnight, the BGB battalion chief said.

“At one stage, the BGB team gave signal to two fishing trawlers coming from Myanmar’s westernmost state of Rakhine, but they opened fire on the BGB men from their boat.”

“In retaliation, BGB men fired back, leaving one dead and four injured. A boat was seized with 28,000 yaba tablets,” he said.
