Murder accused killed in Mymensingh ‘gunfight’

A murder accused was killed in a reported gunfight in Mymensingh town early today.

Deceased Sarfan Islam Babu, 28, was the prime accused in a case filed for killing a person named Peu Babu, reports our local correspondent.

He was also accused in two murder cases and two other criminal cases filed with Kotwali Police Station, said Khandaker Shaker Ahmed, officer-in-charge (investigation) of the police station. 

Sarfan was arrested by police in Dhaka yesterday and later he was taken to Mymensingh.

Law enforcers along with Sarfan raided Teenkona Pukurpar area to arrest other accused in the murder case, said Md Ashikur Rahman, officer-in-charge (OC) of Detective Branch (DB) of police in the district.

Sensing presence of the lawmen, aides of Sarfan opened fire that forced police to retaliate with gunfire, triggering a “gunfight” between them around 2:30am, said OC Ashikur, who led the DB team.

The murder accused sustained bullet wounds when he tried to flee the scene during the “gunfight”. He was taken to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital (MMCH) where doctors declared him dead, the OC added. 

A DB constable, Anisur Rahman, was injured during the incident. He was undergoing treatment at Mymensingh Police Lines Hospital.

The body was sent to the MMCH morgue for autopsy. A case was filed in this connection.
