Man gets life for acid attack on Eden college student
A Dhaka court today sentenced a man to life term imprisonment for throwing acid on a student of Eden Women's College in Dhaka in January 2013.
The convict is Md Monir Uddin, 28, of Budishwar under Nasirnagar upazila of Brahmanbaria.
Judge Pradip Kumar Roy of the First Additional District & Sessions Judge’s Court of Dhaka handed down the verdict in presence of the convict after examining documents and 21 prosecution witnesses.
The court also fined the convict Tk one lakh which will be handed over to the victim’s family.
It acquitted another accused Masum, a friend of the convict, as the charge brought against him was not proved.
According to the prosecution, Monir threw acid on Sharmin Akter Ankhi at a marriage registrar's office in the capital's Chankharpool on January 15, 2013 as she refused his marriage proposal.
The victim's brother Mohiuddin Ahmed filed a case with Bangshal Police Station accusing Monir and his friend Masum.
Police arrested Monir from Kurkutichhari in Barkolupazila of Rangamati on January 26 the same year.
On March 14, 2013, detectives pressed charges against the two accused and the court framed charges against them on November 7 the same year.
