‘Drug peddler’ killed in Chapainawabganj ‘gunfight’
An alleged drug peddler was killed in a “gunfight” with law enforcers today in Shibganj upazila of Chapainawabganj.
The deceased was identified as Kaiyum Sheikh, 30, of Shibganj upazila.
The gunfight, however, left one person named Firoz, 38, injured and police have also claimed arrest of another drug peddler named Sony Ali, 30 from the spot.
Acting on a tip-off, police cordoned off Firoz’s house in Shibganj on Sunday night, said Mojahidul Islam, superintendent of police in Chapainawabganj.
Sensing law enforcer’s presence, the gang members opened fire at the police triggering a gun fight between them, the police official added.
After the gunfight, injured Firoz and Kaiyum were taken to Shibganj Health Complex. Later, they were shifted to Rajshahi Medical College on Monday as their condition deteriorated.
There, Kaiyum died and Firoz is still undergoing treatment.
The duo already had several cases filed against them with Shibganj Police Station, the police super said adding that one pistol, four rounds of bullets and 200 grammes of heroin were recovered from the spot.
With this death, the number of dead people has risen up to 160 during the ongoing nationwide anti-narcotics drives. Most of them were killed in “shootout” incidents involving police and Rab.
