Cop attacker killed in Mymensingh ‘gunfight’

The prime accused in a case filed over an attack on a police officer was killed in a reported gunfight with detectives at Mymensingh sadar upazila early today.

The deceased was identified as Ujjal Miah,33,an alleged drug trader,son of Samor Ali of Jailkhana Road area in Gouripur municipality.

A team of Detective Branch of police conducted a drive at Faliamari area in Mymensingh around 3:00 am to arrest Ujjal, reports our Mymensingh correspondent quoting SA Newazi, additional superintendent of police (Crime) of Mymensingh.

Sensing the presence of the law enforcers, Ujjal and his associates opened fire on them prompting police to retaliate which triggered a gunfight.

Ujjal was caught in the line of fire and sustained bullet injuries to his chest, the ASP said.

He was taken to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital where doctors declared him dead.

Two policemen-Sub-Inspector Iftekhar and Constable Faridul Islam also sustained injuries during the incident, the ASP added.

On March 28, Sub-Inspector Asaduzzaman Asad, 37, of Gauripur Police Station was injured as Ujjal stabbed him in the back during a drive.

The injured official is now undergoing treatment at Combined Military Hospital(CMH) in Dhaka.
