4 held over 9 women’s death in Ctg stampede
Four people were detained today hours after a case was filed over the incident of nine women’s death in a stampede when thousands of people gathered to collect zakat and essentials provided by an industrial group in Chittagong’s Satkania upazila.
The detention was made following drives conducted by the law enforcers in Chittagong city, Satkania and Sitakunda upazilas, reports our staff correspondent from Chittagong.
The detainees -- Muridul Alam alias Murad, 27, Md Idrish, 26, Azgar Ali, 28, Habib Ahmed Sahed, 32, -- were on-duty on behalf of Kabir Steel Re-rolling Mills (KSRM) when the stampede took place yesterday, said Rafiqul Islam, officer-in-charge of Satkania Police Station.
Ismail Hossain, husband of deceased Hasina Akhter, filed the case with Satkania Police Station accusing Md Shahjahan, managing director of KSRM, and five to six unidentified persons, said Hasanuzzaman Molla, additional superintendent of police (Satkania circle).
KSRM managing director Shahjahan is yet to be arrested, OC Rafiqul said.
Nine women were killed and around 25 injured in a stampede when over 30,000 people gathered at Anis Bari Jame Mosque ground in Ghatiadanga village of Satkania upazila yesterday when they came to know about KSRM’s distribution of zakat and iftar essentials.
