Shujan for city govt to ensure good governance
Sushasoner Jonno Nagorik (Shujan) today called for initiating a city government to provide better service to citizens and good governance to cities.
Muhammad Jahangir, member of Shujan's national committee, made the call ahead of the three city corporation elections to be held in Dhaka and Chittagong on April 28.
He was addressing a press briefing at Jatiya Press Club in Dhaka.
City mayors work under a government and they cannot take any decision without its consent, he said.
Once the city government is implemented, the mayors will be the chief of a city, Jahangir said.
As per its concept, there will be a city parliament comprising of a mayor and councilors, he said. "People will elect councilors by vote while the councilors will elect their mayor," he added.
Jahangir however said the city government cannot be implemented in the present situation in Dhaka as the capital has been split into two parts.
To execute the plan of city government, the divided cities will have to be brought under an umbrella, he added.
