Murder accused killed in gunfight: police
A man was killed in a reported gunfight with police in Dhaka's Khilgaon area early today, hours after he was arrested from Airport Road area.
The deceased -- Sohel Hawlader alias Juna (30) of Adinagar village in Faridpur's Bhanga upazila -- was an accused in 17 cases, including murder and drug, filed with different police stations, according to police.
Mashiur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Khilgaon Police Station, told The Daily Star that a team of the police station in association with Airport Armed Police Battalion arrested Sohel from the Airport Road area yesterday evening after he reached Dhaka from Cox's Bazar.
Later, police along with him went to Nagdarpar area of Khilgaon around 3:00am to recover hidden firearms and drugs, said the OC.
Sensing their presence, Sohel's associates opened fire, prompting law enforcers to fire back in "self-defence", the police official said.
At one stage, Sohel suffered bullet injuries while his cohorts managed to flee the scene.
He was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) where doctors declared him dead, the OC said
Police recovered a revolver from the spot, he added.
