Torab Ali, who was acquitted from the BDR carnage case recently, died at the Coronary Care Unit (CCU) at Dhaka Medical College Hospital around 6:00am. He was 80.

Torab Ali was hospitalised on Wednesday with cardiac complications and was undergoing there since then, Mohammad Hanif, a guard of Dhaka Central Jail told The Daily Star.

He was awarded life in jail by a lower court on November 5, 2013 but was acquitted from the case by the High Court on November 27 last year.

Though he got acquittal from the HC but his release order did not reach the jail authorities, Hanif said. Torab was suffering from various old age-related complications, he added.

His body has been kept at Dhaka Medical College morgue, said Sub-inspector Bacchu Mia, in-charge of DMCH’s Police Outpost.

Dhaka city BNP leader Nasiruddin Ahmed Pintu and local Awami League leader Torab Ali were awarded life-term imprisonment as their involvement in the conspiracy in organising the BDR mutiny and committing murder was proved.

Nasir Uddin Pintu also died of cardiac arrest at Rajshahi jail on May 3, 2015.

The court acquitted 271 persons as the prosecution could not establish the charges brought against them. Besides, 267 persons were given sentences for different tenure.

The brutal killing of the country's top army officials in the much hated BDR carnage had created widespread sensation at home and abroad.

The mutineers also looted arms and ammunitions during the 33 hours' bloodbath at the Peelkhana headquarters in the city.
