Ctg city polls ‘likely in June’
Elections to the Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) are likely to be held in the middle of next June, said Election Commission Secretary Sirajul Islam today.
"We have plans to hold the election by June 15. We think the second week of that month is the suitable time for the polls," he told reporters at his office in the capital's EC Secretariat.
The tenure of the CCC office bearers will expire on July 26. As per electoral laws, the polls must be held any day during 180 days before the expiry of the tenure, said EC officials.
Talking about the long overdue elections to the bifurcated Dhaka city corporations, the secretary said the commission will take necessary initiatives to hold the polls after the LGRD ministry completes the boundary demarcation.
"If the ministry completes the task immediately, the commission will surely take into consideration the issues of ongoing political situation and the SSC and HSC examinations while declaring polls schedules," he added.
The last election to the undivided Dhaka City Corporation was held in April 2002 and its tenure expired in May 2007.
