Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) has suspected that Foyzur Rahman, who knifed Muhammed Zafar Iqbal yesterday, believes in militancy.

In primary interrogation, Foyzur confessed that he believes in militancy, Ali Haydar Mohammad Azad, commanding officer of Rab-9 in Sylhet, told reporters at a briefing at his office this afternoon.

"But, we aren’t sure whether he used to belong any other organisations," Azad said adding that the attacker was a madrasa student and he did not continue education after passing Dakhil exam.

To get farther details, Rab also picked up two people and one of them is a photocopy shop owner where Foyzur used to work for at least 10 months, the Rab official said.

Later in the day, Foyzur was handed over to the Jalalabad Police Station and shifted to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College from Sylhet Combined Military Hospital (CMH), Mushfiqur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Jalalabad Police Station, told our local correspondent.

The main investigation into the incident will be conducted by police while Rab will conduct a shadow inquiry, Azad said.

Prof Muhammed Zafar Iqbal came under a knife attack yesterday. He was initially treated at MAG Osmani Medical College and Hospital in Sylhet where he had to be administered 27 stitches and was given two bags of blood.

Later, he was flown to the capital by an air ambulance on the directives of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. He reached the Combined Military Hospital (CMH) in Dhaka around midnight.

He is now doing well and is out of danger, a doctor in CMH said today.
