Group of DU students demand honorary doctorate for Zakir Naik

A group of Dhaka University students today submitted a memorandum demanding that the university confer an honorary doctorate degree on Islamic preacher Zakir Naik through a special convocation.

The memorandum demands that the DU confer an honorary degree on Zakir Naik during his visit to Bangladesh.

Riyadul Islam, a student of the Department of Arabic, raised the demand in front of the DU administrative building and informed the media about submission of the memorandum around 3:00pm.

In their statement, the students claimed that conferring the honorary degree on Zakir Naik will be "a historic step to honour the message of Islamic knowledge, rationality, and humanity" while also enhancing the international reputation and image of Dhaka University.

"We firmly believe that with your kind consideration, this noble and timely proposal will be realised, and the global reputation and dignity of both Bangladesh and Dhaka University will increase manifold," their statement read.
