Garment workers propose Tk 20,393 as minimum salary
The workers' representative in the minimum wage board for garment workers today proposed Tk 20,393 as the minimum monthly salary for the workers.
Sirajul Islam Rony, the workers' representative in the wage board, proposed the amount at the fourth meeting of the board held at its office at Segunbagicha in Dhaka.
However, the owners' representative in the board, Md Siddiqur Rahman, proposed Tk 10,400 as the minimum monthly salary.
Liaquat Ali Mollah, chairman of the minimum wage board, said they will further discuss both the proposals to reach a consensus and to finalise the minimum wage, which is scheduled to come into effect from December this year.
The board will hold the next meeting on November 1 to finalise the minimum monthly salary for the garment workers, Mollah said.
The union leaders from different trade bodies in the garment sector chanted slogans outside of the wage board's office and denied the owners' proposal as they have been demanding over Tk 23,000 as minimum salary.
The board members and chairman briefed the journalists after the meeting.
