BNP leader Minar held for Ekramul murder
Detectives in the capital have arrested BNP leader Mahtab Uddin Chowdhury Minar, the lone accused to be named in the case filed for the murder of Phulgazi upazila chairman Ekramul Haq in Feni.
The Phulgazi upazila president of BNP was picked up in the city on the murder charge, Paritosh Ghosh, superintendent of police in Feni, said at a press briefing at his office.
According to a competent source in police, Detective Branch (BD) of police captured Minar in Kachukhet area of Kafrul Police Station.
Inspector Abul Kalam Azad, also investigation officer of the case, told The Daily Star that they traced Minar’s location by tracking his mobile phone calls, reports our Feni correspondent.
Then Feni Model Police Station sought help of the detectives in Dhaka to carry out the arrest.
“Minar will be taken to Feni Mode Police Station tonight from where the investigators will produce him before court,” Azad said.
Ekramul, who was the president of Phulgazi union Awami League, was shot and then burnt alive in his car in broad day-light on May 20.
After the incident, Ekramul’s brother Rezaul filed the murder case accusing Minar, who is also convener of Jatiyatabadi Tanti Dal of Feni district unit and at least 35 unnamed people for the killing.
Police have so far arrested a total of 18 people including Minar for their alleged link with the gruesome murder.
Besides, Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) detained Sajeeb, 25, from Birinchi area of Feni Municipality last night for his alleged link in the killing.
Rab also recovered one sophisticated pistol and two rounds of bullets from his possession.
Rab suspects that the pistol was used in the killing mission.
The elite force along with Sajeeb is carrying out raid at different parts in the area to collect more evidence over the murder.
