A boost to classical music
Peshkar Cultural Forum organised the fourth episode of Raaga and Rhythm, its regular classical music soiree, at Chhayanaut's main auditorium on January 15. Both emerging and accomplished artistes performed vocal and instrumental recitals at the soiree.
Promising artiste Tamnia Islam set off the soiree with khayal performance set on the romantic Raga Behag. Mir Naqibul Islam on tabla and Talha Bin Ali on harmonium accompanied the singer. Ashok Kumar Sarker came next on stage to play Raga Puriya Dhaneshree on his esraj. Swarup Hossain was on tabla to accompany him.
The highlight of the evening was sitar performance by accomplished artiste Amzad Khan, belonging to Imdadkhani Gharana. The gayaki-ang sitar player showed his ace with alap, jod, jhala set on Raga Jhinjhoti. Later, he presented a vilambit teentaal gaut, some melodic phrases of the raga and an inspired jhala. Mir Naqibul Islam's jugalbandi-style accompaniment impressed all. The artiste later presented a piece based on Raga Pilu.
The last performer of the evening, Dolon Kanungo, played Mohon Veena with Swarup Hossain accompanying him on tabla. The artiste's performance came to an end with the sweetness of Raga Bhairavi.
General Secretary of Peshkar Cultural Forum Mir Naqibul Islam informed the audience of holding a tabla Utshab soon in Dhaka.
