Jaya to play Supriya Devi in remake

Veteran West Bengal actor Supriya Devi breathed her last on January 26, and the Kolkata film industry is preparing to pay a fitting tribute by producing a film based on the late star's life. It was announced three days after the late actor's death that the upcoming remake of the 1968 film “Chaurangi”, promises Supriya Devi and legendary actor Uttam Kumar leaping back to life on the Tollywood theatre curtains. Popular Bangladeshi actor Jaya Ahsan has been reeled in to play the role of Supriya Devi, with West Bengal actor Prosenjit Chatterjee gracing her side as Uttam Kumar. Srijit Mukherjee is to direct the film, which is scheduled for filming from the month of June this year.

The movie will mark Jaya's first time signing up to work in a remake. She said, “It is the highest honour to represent the great Supriya Devi on the big screen. However, this film will be set in modern times, with elements of the book adapted to suit the setting. The film unit is spectacular, and I look forward to working in the movie.”

“Chaurangi” is based on the 1962 novel of the same name. “Chaurangi” hit the bestselling racks soon after its publication, and is noted to introduce modern lifestyle elements such as air travel, five star hotels and more to its readers. Actors Jishu Sengupta is slated to don the role of Aninda Pakrashi, with Mamata Shankar portraying Mrs. Pakrashi. Anjan Dutt and Abir Chatterjee will play the roles of Marco Polo and Shankar, respectively. The film will be produced in collaboration with Sree Venkatesh and the director's Matchcut Productions Private Limited.
