Doha seeks Dhaka's support for its Unesco DG candidate

Qatar has sought Bangladesh's support for its nominee and Qatar Emir's Cultural Adviser Dr Hamad Bin Abdulaziz Al-Kawari who will contest for the next director general of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (Unesco).
Bangladesh will "consider extending its support" to him as Qatar's well-deserved candidate for the top post of the Unesco and the matter is likely to be confirmed during his visit to Bangladesh.
His particulars have already been forwarded to Dhaka.
Bangladesh Ambassador to Qatar Ashud Ahmed met the Cultural Adviser, also the former minister for culture, art and heritage, on Wednesday and discussed various issues of the bilateral relations between Bangladesh and Qatar, including the Unesco issue, according to Bangladesh Embassy in Doha.
The Bangladesh ambassador was invited by the adviser at his office to seek Bangladesh's support for his election to the position of the Director General of the Unesco.
During the meeting, the adviser apprised the Bangladesh envoy of the present condition of his campaign for the election which will be held in October 2017.
The adviser of Qatar Emir expressed his hope that he would get Bangladesh's support given the existing excellent relations between the two brotherly Muslim countries.
He said that he would visit Bangladesh sometime in the coming months to meet with Bangladesh leadership in this regard.
He also mentioned that the Emir would seek support during his soon to-be-undertaken visit to Bangladesh.
Kawari briefed the Bangladesh ambassador about his activities for the development of art, culture and Islamic heritage not only for the benefit of his country but also for the greater interest of the international community in general and Muslim world in particular.
Getting elected for heading the prestigious UN body is not a matter of pride for Qatar only but will be something special for the Muslim world as a whole, he added.
No candidate from an Arab country has ever held the highest position in the international organisation currently headed by Irina Bokova, a Bulgarian, who was elected in November 2009 and reelected for a second term in 2013.
She is the first woman to lead the organisation, according to Qatar media reports.
Kuwari has a wide international exposure and expertise and served as ambassador for Qatar in ten countries, including France and the US.
Bangladesh and Qatar enjoy brotherly relations and Qatar is currently hosting nearly three lakh Bangladeshi workers with bright possibility of joining more skilled people including professionals like doctors, IT specialists, Engineers, nurses and salesgirls for newly opened shopping malls.
