Woman killed, 4-year-old injured in Bandarban gunfight: Army

A woman was killed and her four-year-old child was injured during a ''gunfight between a group of Parbatya Chattogram Jana Sanghati Samity and patrol teams of Bangladesh Army'' in Rowangchhari upazila of Bandarban yesterday, according to a regional press release from army.

On information that some extortionists of PCJSS were staying in Angaipara area, three patrol teams of army took position there between 5:30pm and 6:00pm yesterday, the press release said.

Sensing their presence, the criminals opened fire targeting army personnel and fled the scene, it said.

Later, the patrol teams chased the criminals and conducted a search operation in the area.

While searching the area, they found a woman and her child with bullet wounds, the press release said.

Army men rescued the duo. But the woman succumbed to her injuries when they were being shifted to Bandarban Sadar Hospital in an ambulance of Bangladesh Army, it added.

It is suspected that the criminals engaged in the gun attack in Baghmara on July 7 that left six people dead, says the press release.     

Our Bandarban correspondent said locals identified the deceased as Shantibala Tanchangya (32).
