Google unveils brand new Pixel 9a

Google has unveiled the Pixel 9a, its latest budget-friendly smartphone, featuring a redesign, upgraded camera capabilities, and the new Tensor G4 chip, all starting at $499. Set for release in April, Google says this new smartphone aims to deliver premium AI features and durability at an accessible price point.
The Pixel 9a sports a refreshed design with a flat profile, rounded edges, and a 6.3-inch Actua display at 2,700 nits, 35% brighter than its predecessor. The 120 Hz adaptive refresh rate ensures smoother scrolling, while colour options include Peony, Iris, Porcelain, and Obsidian.
Powered by Google's Tensor G4 chip, the Pixel 9a integrates Gemini Nano, enabling on-device AI tasks without compromising speed. Gemini assists with apps like Maps and Calendar, while Gemini Live allows voice interactions for brainstorming or practice conversations. Google says that soon, subscribers to Gemini Advanced will access live video and screen-sharing features, letting the AI analyse surroundings or discuss on-screen content.
Photography is a standout focus, with a dual-camera system featuring a 48 MP main sensor and 13 MP ultrawide lens. For the first time in the A-series, it introduces Macro Focus for detailed close-ups. AI-powered tools like 'Add Me' (blending group photos to include everyone) and 'Best Take' (combining facial expressions) aim to enhance creativity. The 'Magic Editor' tool can reframe shots, expand images, or reimagine scenes — such as adding autumn leaves — via text prompts. Night Sight, Astrophotography, and improved Panorama modes further bolster its camera credentials, as per an official blog post by Google.
Battery life reaches over 30 hours, extendable to 100 hours with Extreme Battery Saver. Durability is emphasised with an IP68 rating for water and dust resistance, alongside seven years of OS and security updates — a first for the A-series.
Additional features include 'Circle to Search' for instant queries, 'Pixel Studio' for image creation, and call tools like 'Hold For Me'. Security upgrades include VPN access, 'Find My Device' for location sharing, and emergency features like 'Car Crash Detection'.
Priced at $499, the Pixel 9a will be available from April via the Google Store and retail partners, according to Google.
