Google Maps changes 'Gulf of Mexico' to 'Gulf of America' for US users

Google Maps
The update comes after US President Donald Trump recently signed an executive order to rename the Gulf in government documents.

Google Maps is now showing 'Gulf of America' instead of 'Gulf of Mexico' for users in the United States. This change follows an update by the US Geographic Names Information System, which now lists the waterway as 'The Gulf of America, formerly known as the Gulf of Mexico'.

The update comes after US President Donald Trump recently signed an executive order to rename the Gulf in government documents. Google in an official blog post said it follows its long practice of using official government sources to update map names.

For US users, the Maps app now displays 'Gulf of America'. Users in Mexico will continue to see 'Gulf of Mexico', while people in other parts of the world will see both names. The name you see is based on your phone's location settings or the region selected in your Google Maps search settings, said Google in the blog post.

According to a report by BBC, Mexico has criticised the change, arguing that the US has no right to rename the Gulf. Google made the update on Monday after the Interior Department's database listed the new name. The updated listing describes the Gulf as a major body of water with an average depth of 5,300 feet, bordered by the US, Mexico, and Cuba.

Last month, Google also said it would change the name of Mount McKinley to reflect the new naming policy, although that change has not yet appeared on Google Maps.
