Google has recently announced the launch of Android XR, a new operating system designed for the next generation of extended reality (XR) devices, including headsets and glasses.

Developed in collaboration with Samsung, the system will enable XR devices to better understand user intent and the surrounding environment. Google has also partnered with companies like Qualcomm, Lynx, Sony, and XREAL to create a broad range of devices to meet diverse consumer and business needs. In a blog post Google announced the first device powered by Android XR, codenamed Project Moohan and built by Samsung, which is scheduled to be released by next year.

These headsets will allow users to switch between fully immersive virtual environments and the real world, while interacting with AI assistant Gemini for tasks such as planning, research, and device control, as per Google's blog.

Google is also reimagining its popular apps, including YouTube, Google TV, and Google Photos, for use in XR, with features like 3D photo viewing and immersive city explorations via Google Maps.

"We can take those experiences, which already work great, and find new ways to be helpful for people," said Julie Aranda, Director of UX, XR, Google during the announcement of Android XR. She added, "I can't wait to spatialize old videos. It'll feel like you're right in your memories again."

In addition to headsets, Android XR will eventually support smart glasses designed for all-day use. These glasses will integrate with users' other Android devices and provide real-time information such as directions and message summaries, directly in the wearer's line of sight or through their ear.

As part of its broader strategy, Google is inviting developers and device makers to build on Android XR. The company has released a developer preview to encourage the creation of apps and games for XR devices, using familiar tools like Android Studio, ARCore, and Unity.
