Vince Gilligan, the creator of popular tv series Breaking Bad, has made a pointed statement against artificial intelligence (AI) in his new Apple TV series Pluribus, which concludes with a message in its credits: "This show was made by humans."

The phrasing appears to be a deliberate attempt to reassure viewers that Pluribus was created entirely without AI tools, and could set a precedent for other filmmakers seeking to distinguish human-made work from machine-generated content.

The brief disclaimer, appearing just below a standard note about animal safety, stands out at a time when the entertainment industry is struggling with the growing influence of generative AI. Image: Apple TV.

In a recent interview with Variety, the American magazine, Gilligan, who rose to prominence through Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul, expressed his concerns with AI in filmmaking.

Stating that he hates AI, Gilligan described the technology as "the world's most expensive and energy-intensive plagiarism machine."

Pluribus marks Gilligan's return to science fiction, a genre he previously explored as a writer on The X-Files. The new series stars Better Call Saul actor Rhea Seehorn as a romantic novelist whose life is upended by an alien invasion.
