Astro Bot, a 3D platformer game for PlayStation 5, secured the 'Game of the Year' title at The Game Awards 2024. It triumphed over strong competition from Balatro, Black Myth: Wukong, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, and Metaphor: ReFantazio.

The award was presented by Swen Vincke, director of last year's 'Game of the Year' winner, Baldur's Gate 3, who spoke about how receiving the award had significantly impacted his life.

Accepting the award, Nicolas Doucet, President of Team Asobi, the studio behind Astro Bot, thanked the development team and PlayStation for their support in bringing the project to life. Doucet also reflected on how Nintendo's Super Mario Bros inspired his early interest in gaming and credited 30 years of PlayStation's legacy as a foundation for the gameplay seen in Astro Bot.

Released in 2024, Astro Bot is developed by Team Asobi and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment for the PlayStation 5. As a sequel to Astro's Playroom (2020), the game marks PlayStation's 30th anniversary, where players guide Astro Bot, a robot, through various levels using the DualSense controller, employing abilities like jumping, hovering, and spin-attacking. The game has been highly acclaimed by critics, and has reportedly reached 1.5 million sales as of November 2024.

Astro Bot was among the evening's biggest winners, earning four awards in total, including 'Best Game Direction', 'Best Family Game', and 'Best Action/Adventure Game'.

Other notable winners included Metaphor: ReFantazio, which won in three major categories: 'Best Narrative', 'Best Art Direction', and 'Best RPG'. Balatro received accolades for 'Best Indie' and 'Best Debut Indie Game'. Final Fantasy VII Rebirth stood out for its music, earning the award for 'Best Score and Music'. Meanwhile, Senua's Saga: Hellblade II was recognised for 'Best Audio Design', and Melina Juergens won 'Best Performance' for her role in the game.

Several announcements and trailers were revealed in this year's Game Awards as well, including reveals for The Witcher 4, Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree, Okami 2, and Naughty Dog's Intergalactic.

The esports scene also saw recognition, with League of Legends named 'Best Esports Game' and T1 crowned 'Best Esports Team'. Lee Sang-hyeok, known as Faker, won 'Best Esports Athlete'. Additionally, Grand Theft Auto VI was once again awarded 'Most Anticipated Game'.
