Apple is bringing live translation to AirPods: report

Apple is preparing to introduce live translation capabilities to its AirPods, according to a recent report by Bloomberg.

The feature, which will enable users to translate conversations in real time, is expected to be integrated with iOS 19, the next iteration of Apple's operating system, as per the report. The move comes as Apple lags behind competitors in bringing live translation to wireless earbuds.

Google first introduced the feature with its Pixel Buds in 2017 and later expanded it to the Pixel Buds Pro in 2022. Other tech firms, including Meta and Humane, have attempted similar real-time translation tools in their wearable devices, though with varying levels of success.

According to Bloomberg, Apple's approach will allow a conversation to be translated by playing a real-time translation of spoken language directly into the AirPods. If, for instance, a Spanish speaker converses with an English speaker, the translated version will be played in the AirPods of the English speaker. When the English speaker responds, their iPhone will play the Spanish translation through its speakers.

Apple has not yet officially confirmed the development of this feature. The report comes amid delays in the company's AI-upgraded Siri, which Apple recently admitted would take longer than expected to roll out. Apple is also reportedly planning a major redesign of iOS, iPadOS, and macOS this year as it continues to advance its AI and software capabilities.
