Bangladesh should immediately take steps to reclaim Tangail sari rights
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina today instructed officials concerned to take steps about the Geographical Indication (GI) certification for the country's important products
The industries ministry is going to award Tangail sari the geographical indication (GI) status following a public outcry in Bangladesh, a week after India granted the same recognition to ‘Tangail Saree of Bengal’.
The government should identify and register all our GI products immediately, before we see them being snatched away.
Originating from the Tangail district in Bangladesh, Tangail saris have been a part of our cultural heritage for ages. However, West Bengal has been awarded the geographical indication (GI) tag for Tangail saris — a decision that has stirred up a considerable amount of debate and concern. On 1 February, 2024, India’s Ministry of Culture wrote in a post on Facebook, “The Tangail saree, originating from West Bengal, is a traditional handwoven masterpiece.”
Tangail sari weavers and traders are so far disappointed with the low turnout of wholesale buyers at Karatia market in Tangail sadar upazila as they had hoped to make good sales on the occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr this year.
The government will soon recognise Tangail sari with the geographical indication (GI) status, said Industries Secretary Jakia Sultana today.
After a two-year-long wait owing to the pandemic, Tangail sari weavers have finally been able to dust off their looms.
