The Supreme Court of India says the incidents of mob lynching and cow vigilantism cannot be allowed to become a new norm, and asks the parliament to consider enacting a new law with provision for deterrent punishment to effectively deal with such incidents.
In the first ever prosecution in a case of lynching over cow vigilantism, a fast track court in Jharkhand sentences 11 people to life imprisonment. Among those awarded punishment is BJP leader Nityanand Mahto.
