‘Brazil-Argentina fans consider a draw as a defeat’

“Brazil and Argentina fans in Bangladesh and around the world often treat a draw like a defeat. They simply can’t accept it,” said Masud Parvez Kaiser, former Bangladesh national football team coach and an avid Brazil supporter.

The Bangladesh AFC Pro-Diploma coach perhaps summed up the emotional reaction of millions of Brazil fans who saw their team open their bid for a record sixth World Cup with a 1-1 draw against last edition’s semifinalists Morocco at the New York-New Jersey Stadium on Sunday.

“I saw many disappointed Brazilian fans today who looked as if they had lost everything. On the other hand, Argentine fans were behaving as if they had beaten Brazil themselves,” Kaiser added. “For fans of Brazil and Argentina, winning alone is not enough. They expect rhythmic, expressive football. The performance matters as much as the result.”

Unlike many Selecao supporters, however, Kaiser believes the result could ultimately serve as a wake-up call rather than a setback.

“Morocco completely disrupted Brazil’s midfield and prevented them from building their usual attacking rhythm. They were a difficult opponent, and in tournaments like this, even a slow start can become a valuable lesson,” he said. “It reminds Brazil that if you are not at your best, you can be punished. That could actually help them in the matches ahead.”

Kaiser also feels that head coach Carlo Ancelotti still has time -- and opportunity -- to refine his ideal starting XI before the knockout stage.

“Ancelotti has said he understands where the problems were and that he will address them. He also made it clear that no one’s place in the starting XI is guaranteed. That suggests we may see changes in the next game as he works on improving coordination between midfield and attack,” Kaiser explained.

“I still think there is a gap in that coordination, something Ancelotti himself admitted. But it should improve as the tournament progresses. These next two group matches are crucial for settling the team and building chemistry,” he added, echoing the cautious optimism of many Brazil fans hoping for a swift turnaround.
