Chattogram end winless run with Dhaka win
Chattogram Challengers bowlers delivered a clinical effort to beat Dhaka Dominators by 15 runs in what turned around to become a low-scoring thriller in the Bangladesh Premier League at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium on Tuesday.
The win ended Chattogram's horrid run that saw them lose six matches on the trot and had them languishing at the bottom of the table but now with two points gained in the inconsequential contest against Dhaka, the Challengers climbed a place to sixth.
Chattogram bowlers, despite having to defend a meagre 1118 for eight, produced a spirited display as they kept things tight making the Dhaka batters work hard for their runs. Dhaka were forced into the backfoot as the pressure got to them and gave away a few wickets choking at 103 for nine.
Batting first, Chattogram got off to a horrid start that saw them lose five wickets for a mere 28 runs on the board.
In-form Usman khan (30) and Curtis Campher (11) knuckled down and stitched a 41-run stand but couldn't take it deeper and it was Ziaur Rahman who gave the innings some life as he injected impetus with his 20-ball 34-run-knock hitting three fours and two sixes in the process, helping Chattogram to post 118 for eight.
The chief destroyer for Dhaka was left-arm spinner Arafat Sunny who foxed out four wickets for 22 runs.
In reply, Dhaka openers, despite looking solid at the start, were dismissed inside the powerplay, with Soumya Sarker going back after scoring 16-ball 21.
Abdullah Al Mamun (2) and Ariful Haque (7) didn't trouble the scorers for long and Dhaka skipper Nasir Hossain yet again had to take the responsibility in the middle but the right-handed batter struggled to get going and after a 33-ball 24, he was dismissed by Campher.
Alex Blake scored a run-a-ball 13 and Zahiduzzaman chewed up 21 balls for his 18 runs before being trapped lbw by Mrittunjoy Chowdhury and Arafat went for naught as Dhaka's innings came to an end at 103 for nine.
