Herath to groom spinners in BCB's four-day camp
With the intention to strengthen the spin-bowling pipeline, the Bangladesh Cricket Board's (BCB) cricket operations committee has initiated to hold a four-day training camp, under the guidance of Bangladesh spin-bowling coach Rangana Herath, starting from tomorrow.
The training camp will take place at the indoor and outer nets of the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur, where a total of 32 spinners, having either first class or Dhaka club-cricket experience, are set to hone their skills.
Of late, there has been a lot of buzz over the lack of quality turners in the Tigers' pipeline after off-spinner Nayeem Hasan missed out in the just-concluded second Test of the two-match series against Sri Lanka due to an injury. Nayeem suffered the setback after the rookie spinner had achieved a six-wicket haul in the previous Test in Chattogram, which ended in a stalemate.
With the absence of another injured off-spinner Mehedi Hasan Miraz, the selectors included batting all-rounder Mosaddek Hossain, mainly because of his part-time off-spin but the cricketer was unable to make any impact in the second Test, which saw the Tigers lose by 10 wickets and hence conceded the series 1-0.
There were further talks over the lack of leg-spinners in the pipeline and the upcoming four-day camp is expected to be the first noteworthy step from the BCB in an attempt to prepare the spinners.
The 32-member squad for the training camp:
Rokibul Hasan, Tanvir Islam, Hasan Murad, Nazmul Hossain Apu, Raihan, Nahidul Islam, Rishad Hossain, Sanjit Saha, Rony Chowdhury, Sunjamul Islam, Iftakhar Sajjad Rony, Rahatul Ferdaus, Tipu Sultan, Al Mamun Raju, Minhajul Abedin Afridi, Meharab Ohin, Shadat Hosain Sabuj, Naim Hossain Sakib, Jubair Hossain Likhon, Akash, Amit Mollick, Mujakkir, Abu Hasim, Ariful Jony, Sk Antor, Ratan, Mohiul Islam Patwari, Tushar Mia, Anik, Taz Md Ehtashum Mahmud, Shadin Islam, Rubel.
