SA Games: Bangladesh wins first silver medal in wrestling
Rina Akhter earned the first silver medal for Bangladesh in the 12th South Asian Games in India in 60kg wrestling (women) event today.
Bangladesh has so far won one silver and eight bronze medals in this year’s SA Games.
Earlier, Molla Sabira Sultana, who has been included in this year’s SA games for the first time, gave Bangladesh the first medal in the 12th South Asian Games in India when she won bronze in 48-kg category (women) in the weightlifting event held at Guwahati’s Bhogeshwari Phukanani Indoor Stadium.
Bangladesh won seven other bronze medals in wrestling, weightlifting and swimming events.
Women wrestlers from Bangladesh Nadi Chakma and Suma Chowdhury won bronze medals in 48-kg and 55-kg categories respectively.
Mostain Bella won bronze medal in 62-kg (men) category of weightlifting event.
Romana Akhter won bronze in 200m Breast Stroke (women) event in swimming, while Md Shariful Islam won bronze in 200m Breast Stroke (men) and Md Mahfizur Rahman won Bronze in 200m Freestyle (men) events.
Bangladesh also won the bronze medal in 400m Freestyle Relay (men) event.
The South Asian Games 2016 is a major multi-sport event taking place from February 5 to February 16 in Guwahati and Shillong, India. A total of 2,672 athletes are scheduled to compete in 228 events over 23 sports.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the tournament in Guwahati on February 5.
