Portugal and Germany will face off in a high-stakes UEFA Nations League semifinal after both teams secured dramatic aggregate victories in their respective quarterfinal ties on Sunday.

Francisco Trincao was the hero for Portugal, coming off the bench to score twice in extra time in a thrilling 5-2 second-leg win over Denmark, which gave the hosts a 5-3 aggregate triumph.

Germany, meanwhile, survived a second-half scare to hold off Italy 5-4 on aggregate despite drawing 3-3 on the night.

In Lisbon, Portugal faced an uphill battle after a 1-0 first-leg defeat in Copenhagen. With Denmark's defensive stalwart Joakim Maehle absent due to personal reasons, his replacement Patrick Dorgu made an early blunder, conceding a penalty just three minutes in by fouling Cristiano Ronaldo. However, Kasper Schmeichel denied Ronaldo from the spot, maintaining Denmark's lead.

Portugal pressed on, with Ronaldo narrowly missing a header before the breakthrough came in the 38th minute — albeit through Danish defender Joachim Andersen, who nodded into his own net under pressure from a Ronaldo-inspired corner. But the tie continued to sway dramatically. Denmark responded through Rasmus Kristensen's header early in the second half, only for Ronaldo to reclaim the lead with a tight-angle finish.

Christian Eriksen's strike in the 76th minute put Denmark back in front on aggregate, setting the stage for Trincao's late heroics. The winger scored in the 86th minute to force extra time, then struck again in the 91st with a delightful clipped finish to finally swing the momentum firmly Portugal's way. Goncalo Ramos sealed the win with a late goal, as a jubilant Ronaldo — subbed off before extra time — rallied the home fans from the sidelines.

"We knew how to suffer, how to be a family," Trincao said after the match. "Cristiano motivates us and the fans — today it was me, tomorrow it'll be someone else. We're all ready."

In Munich, Germany looked to be cruising toward the semifinals after a stunning first half that saw them dismantle Italy with three goals and relentless attacking pressure. Joshua Kimmich opened the scoring with a penalty before assisting Jamal Musiala and Tim Kleindienst to make it 3-0 by halftime. A quick-thinking ballboy played a surprising role in the second goal, swiftly returning the ball for Kimmich's quick corner that caught Italy off guard.

But Italy roared back in the second half. Moise Kean scored twice, and Giacomo Raspadori converted a stoppage-time penalty to level the second leg. Despite conceding three times after the break, Germany held on for a narrow 5-4 aggregate win.

"It was our best first half in years," said coach Julian Nagelsmann. "But we have to learn to manage games better. The second half showed how fragile leads can be."

With both teams showcasing resilience and firepower, the semifinal clash between Portugal and Germany in June promises to be a blockbuster encounter.
