Despite a strong start from India, who dominated the majority of possession, Bangladesh recovered well by creating the better chances, with two attempts hitting the post in the eighth and 11th minute, respectively. Paul Smalley's charges then took the lead near the half-hour mark as forward Piash Ahmed Nova tapped in home, capitalising on a defensive mishap from the hosts.

Both teams could have scored in the next few minutes but it was India who equalised in the 35th through a brilliant header from Gurkirat Singh. However, at the stroke of half time, Bangladesh struck back again with Nova, who made no mistake to score from the spot kick and the forward reacted with Cristiano Ronaldo's "Siuuuu" celebration.

In the second half, the game slowed with injuries and consequent substitutions. Bangladesh adopted a deeper defensive line as India pushed for the second equaliser. In the 84th minute, Rajon Howlader almost widened the margin for Bangladesh by attempting an outrageous shot from 40 yards away that went over the bar.

Eventually, Bangladesh managed to run down the clock as India began their first game of the campaign on the wrong foot.
