Kane's goal-laden England decade

Ten years ago today, Harry Kane made his England debut. We've chartered his rise from debutant scorer, to the nation's favourite son.
Kane was born in Walthamstow, London, on 28 July 1993. He went on to attend Chingford Foundation School in 2005, where David Beckham spent time in the late '80s – both would go on to become England captains. A young Kane is pictured below with Beckham, alongside Kate Goodland, who Kane would go on to marry in 2019.
After being released by Arsenal because he "wasn't very athletic" and "a bit chubby", according to former Gunners academy boss Liam Brady, Kane had a failed trial with Tottenham before eventually joining the club in 2004. He worked his way through the youth sides and while he initially failed to stand out, his attention to detail and desire to improve impressed those watching.
He signed his first professional deal in July 2010, and made his Spurs debut against Hearts in UEFA Europa League qualifying a year after, though he marked the game by missing a penalty. Kane spent the majority of his opening three years on a succession of loans, playing an accumulated 65 games for Leyton Orient, Millwall, Norwich and Leicester across League One and the Championship, scoring 16 times.
Kane netted on his first Premier League start as Tim Sherwood thrust him into the spotlight against Sunderland in April 2014. He deftly flicked in a Christian Eriksen cross, beginning a run of three goals in as many games.
Six months into his Tottenham journey Kane netted his first career hat-trick in a Europa League game against Asteras Tripolis in October 2014. With Spurs leading 5-0, goalkeeper Hugo Lloris was sent off and, without any substitutions left, Kane stuck his hand up to go in goal. He fumbled the subsequent free-kick into the back of the net, but still claimed the match ball.
Kane was selected to represent his country by Roy Hodgson for the first time in March 2015. Subbed on for Wayne Rooney in the 71st minute of a UEFA EURO 2016 qualifier against Lithuania, it took the heir apparent to England's goalscoring throne just 80 seconds to net on his senior international debut. It was assisted by Raheem Sterling – nobody can top his nine set-ups for Kane.
Two days after Johan Cruyff passed away in March 2016, the Three Lions found themselves 2-0 down in a friendly against Germany. Kane, facing away from goal, retrieved the ball from the edge of the box, produced a turn the Dutch master himself would have been proud of to lose two defenders, before firing past Manuel Neuer. England went on to win 3-2.
Kane's England career was only 18 caps old when he first wore the armband, leading his side out in a FIFA 2018 World Cup Russia™ qualifier against Scotland. He typically scored to rescue a 2-2 draw.
Officially made England skipper ahead of Russia 2018, Kane led by example at the finals. A game-winning brace sunk Tunisia, before a hat-trick againast Panama – the first by an Englishman at the World Cup since Gary Lineker in 1986 – secured their knockout berth. He added a penalty against Colombia to the tally as England reached the semi-finals, securing his spot alongside Lineker in the adidas Golden Boot winners' list.
Kane went goal-crazy in qualifying for UEFA EURO 2020. He scored in all six qualifiers, including two hat-tricks, to notch 12 times. Only David Healy in 2008, Robert Lewandowski in 2016 and Romelu Lukaku in 2024 have scored more in a European qualifying campaign. He added four more to the tally at the finals – which were played across Europe, and included a Wembley semi-final and final – but England fell to Italy on penalties in the decider.
England eased to Qatar 2022, with Kane scoring in each of his first five qualifiers to leapfrog Michael Owen into fifth in England's all-time scoring charts with 41. A hat-trick in the penultimate match against Albania put him level with Jimmy Greaves, before a four-goal haul in a 10-0 thrashing of San Marino – the first England man to net a quadruple since Ian Wright against the same opponents 28 years before – powered him level with Lineker on 48 and into joint-third.
In his next outing, Kane netted the winner from the spot in a friendly against Switzerland to surpass Lineker and join Bobby Charlton on 49. The half-century was duly reached two games later, as he rescued a Nations League draw late on against Germany in June 2022.
England were one of the favourites to clinch the world crown at Qatar 2022 and cruised to the quarter-final with Kane bringing up goal number 52 in a 3-0 defeat of Senegal. France took the lead in that last-eight bout, only for Kane to level with an emphatic penalty which drew him level with Rooney as England's highest scorer. Olivier Giroud's late goal regained French control but Kane was offered another chance to level from the spot and eclipse Rooney's record late on, but he blazed the spot-kick high into the Al Khor sky as Gareth Southgate's men fell short.
Redemption didn't have to wait long for Kane's arrival. Handed another chance from the spot in England's opening EURO 2024 qualifier away to Italy next time out, he made no mistake in clinching his history-making moment, and wheeled away to celebrate in a manner seldom seen by England's ice-cool skipper. In total, he added eight goals to the tally in another successful qualifying campaign.
Kane went into EURO 2024 nursing a back injury but still scored an unsurpassed three times at the finals, including an extra-time winner in the last-16 bout with Slovakia, en route to the final. He was substituted an hour into the contest with Spain, as the Three Lions once again suffered European heartbreak.
Two games after the EURO decider, Kane was back on Nations League duty and tumbling records. He brought up 100 caps – only the ninth Englishman to achieve that, and the first in almost ten years – against Finland. Sporting a pair of golden boots to mark the occasion, he nutmegged Robert Ivanov and sent home a piledriver to bring up goal 67, with 68 following soon after.
Thomas Tuchel, who signed Kane when he was in charge of Bayern Munich, confirmed he would remain as England skipper prior to his first two matches as coach earlier this month. Kane continued to conquer, netting in both matches against Albania and Latvia respectively.

England records
*With 71 strikes, Kane is England's highest goalscorer, some 18 clear of Wayne Rooney. Out of European players, only Cristiano Ronaldo (136), Romelu Lukaku (88) and Robert Lewandowski (85) have scored more.
*His 63 goals in competitive action are also some 27 more than second-best Rooney's 36. In total, a record 15 of those have come at major tournaments. Lineker is second with ten.
*All of Lineker's tournament strikes came at the World Cup, two clear of Kane. The Bayern star is joint-26th on the all-time World Cup scoring chart, alongside the likes of Diego Maradona and Cristiano Ronaldo.
*Kane and Lineker remain tied in the England hat-trick stakes, both with five apiece. One more treble will take him level with Jimmy Greaves' record.
*In 2021, Kane netted a record 16 England goals across the year, breaking the record set by George Hilsdon (12) in 1908 and equalled by Dixie Dean in 1927.
*Seven of those goals came just three days apart when he netted three and four goals against Albania and San Marino respectively in World Cup 2022 qualifying. That beat the previous record set by Raul in major tournament qualifying, when he netted seven times over four days in 1999, while adding him to the list of Englishmen to score back-to-back hat-tricks with Vivian Woodward (1909), Dean (1927) and Tommy Taylor (1957).
*Not including penalty shootouts, Kane has taken a record 27 spot-kicks, scoring 23. Frank Lampard is next-best with nine.
*Kane has scored both of his penalties in shootouts (Colombia at Russia 2018 and Italy at EURO 2020), making him one of nine players to have a 100-per-cent record having taken two or more. Only David Platt, Alan Shearer and Michael Owen have netted more times in shootouts with a perfect conversion rate.
*With 105 caps, Kane is joint-ninth on the all-time chart alongside Billy Wright. Peter Shilton (125), Wayne Rooney (120), David Beckham (115), Steven Gerrard (114), Bobby Moore (108), Ashley Cole (107) and Bobby Charlton and Frank Lampard (both 106) remain in his way of that record.
*He does hold the England record for caps won at major tournaments with 29.
Other goal-scoring records
*In 2016/17, Kane netted 29 times to scoop his second straight Premier League Golden Boot. He'd go on to win the award three times across his final eight seasons at Spurs – only Thierry Henry has won more.
*He ended 2017 with back-to-back hat-tricks against Burnley and Southampton to finish on 39 Premier League goals across the calendar year, surpassing Alan Shearer's record of 36, while becoming the first player in the division's history to score six hat-tricks in a year. In total, he netted 56 times for club and country – more than any other player in Europe's big five leagues.
*Further ground was broken in 2020/21, as Kane scored a league-high 23 league goals and recorded 13 assists to become the first player ever to outright win both the Golden Boot and the Playmaker of the Season Award.
*With 280 goals in 435 games, Kane is Tottenham Hotspur's all-time leading scorer. His tally of 213 Premier League goals can only be bettered by Alan Shearer's 260.
