‘I saw Ronaldo cry’: Modric on Mourinho’s intensity
Luka Modric has revealed that Jose Mourinho's intensity at Real Madrid once reduced Cristiano Ronaldo to tears, as the Croatian midfielder named the Portuguese coach as the toughest manager he has worked under.
Speaking to Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera, Modric reflected on his single season in 2012–13 under Mourinho at Real Madrid, describing the former Chelsea and Manchester United boss as both demanding and uncompromising.
"[He is] special. As a coach and as a person. He was the one who wanted me at Real Madrid. Without Mourinho, I would never have arrived," said Modric, now playing for AC Milan under Massimiliano Allegri.
Modric, who has since enjoyed a decorated career under the likes of Zinedine Zidane and Carlo Ancelotti, said Mourinho's directness set him apart. He recalled a striking moment involving Ronaldo during Mourinho's tenure at the Bernabeu.
"I saw him make Cristiano Ronaldo cry in the locker room, a man who gives his all on the pitch, because for once he didn't chase the opposing full-back," added the six-time Champions League winner.
Explaining Mourinho's approach, Modric highlighted the former Real boss's blunt honesty. "Mourinho is very direct with the players, but he's honest. He treated Sergio Ramos and the new arrivals the same way -- if he had to tell you something, he'd tell you.
"Max (Allegri) is like that too: he tells you to your face what's right and what's wrong. Honesty is fundamental."
