Butler's charges suffer narrow defeat against Malaysia
Bangladesh women's football team's return to the National Stadium in Dhaka after 12 years ended in disappointment as they suffered a 1-0 defeat to Malaysia in the opening match of the Infinix Tri-Nation Series on Wednesday.
A defensive lapse from makeshift centre-back Kohati Kisku proved costly in the 29th minute, when Nur Anisyah Binti capitalised on Bangladesh's poorly executed high defensive line and finished expertly to score the only goal of the match.
This is Bangladesh's third consecutive defeat following two heavy defeats against Thailand away from home last month, something that will provide a lot of foot for thought for the Bangladesh management and coaching staff.
Bangladesh began in a 4-5-1 formation, with young forward Sultana Khatun deployed as the lone striker. Ritu Porna Chakma and Shamsunnahar Jr operated in the wide attacking roles, while Monika Chakma, Maria Manda and Munki Akter formed the midfield trio. Notably, Sapna Rani was absent from the starting XI. At the back, Afeida Khandaker partnered Kohati Kisku in central defence, with Sheiuli Azim and Shamsunnahar Jr playing as full-backs. Rupna Chakma started in goal.
Despite enjoying the lion's share of possession, Bangladesh -- ranked 12 places below Malaysia in the FIFA standings -- struggled to create meaningful chances. Most attacking moves came through the flanks, but Malaysia's disciplined defensive structure consistently frustrated the hosts.
Peter Butler's side should have levelled in the 68th minute when Ritu Porna delivered a superb cross from the left following a neat one-two with second-half substitute Sagorika. However, Sagorika failed to convert the free header, directing it straight at the Malaysian goalkeeper.
Rupna had to produce a point-blank save in stoppage time to keep the margin of defeat to minimum.
Malaysia will next face Azerbaijan on Saturday, while Bangladesh take on Azerbaijan in the final match of the three-team tournament on Tuesday.
