India cruise to easy win over meek Tigers
Yashasvi Jaiswal hit a half-century as India completed a comprehensive seven-wicket win over Bangladesh in the second Test and take the series 2-0 at the Green Park Stadium in Kanpur today.
Jaiswal made 51 off 45 balls, his second half-century of the match, while Virat Kohli hit an unbeaten 29 as India reached 98-3, chasing 95 in the second session on the fifth day.
Mehedi Hasan Miraz claimed the wickets of captain Rohit Sharma (eight) and Shubman Gill (six) and Taijul Islam dismissed Jaiswal.
The Indian bowlers had set up the win in the morning session, where they picked up eight wickets with Ravindra Jadeja and Jasprit Bumrah claiming three wickets each.
Shadman Islam was the lone Bangladesh batter to stand out, making 50 off 101 balls and his 55-run fourth wicket stand with skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto (19) had given the Tigers some hope of taking the match deep.
But once Shanto departed, Bangladesh lost the next three wickets for just three runs and from there was no coming back for the visitors.
Earlier, the match had lost the second and third day owing to rain and a wet outfield. But after bowling out Bangladesh for 233 in the first innings, India breathed life into the match with an exhilarating batting display, making 285-9 in reply and declaring the innings late on Day 4.
Bangladesh lost a couple of wickets yesterday but had a realistic chance of drawing the match, which they squandered, effectively losing the game in two and a half days.
Miraz strikes twice but India on track for victory
Mehedi Hasan Miraz has struck twice in quick succession, removing India captain Rohit Sharma for eight and Shubman Gill for six as India are two down for 34 in pursuit of a 95-run target in the second session on the fifth and final day to win the second Test and take the series 2-0 at the Green Park Stadium in Kanpur today.
Rohit and Yashasvi Jaiswal started positively to end the game in a hurry. Rohit tried to slog sweep Miraz for a six, but ended up hitting it straight to Hasan Mahmud at the boundary.
Gill was the next to depart, getting hit on the back leg and rightfully given out LBW.
Bangladesh all out for 146
Bangladesh are all out for 146 in their second innings after a disastrous morning session where they lost eight wickets for 120 runs and India now need to chase down a target of just 95 to win the second Test on the fifth and final day and take the series 2-0 at the Green Park Stadium in Kanpur today.
Ravindra Jadeja and Jasprit Bumrah were the chief destroyers in the session, striking three times each while Ravichandran Ashwin, who had taken two wickets yesterday, and Akash Deep claimed one wicket each.
Shadman Islam scored a half-century and his 55-run partnership with skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto was the best period of the session for Bangladesh following the loss of Mominul Haque (two) in just the third over of the day, after they resumed play on 26-2.
But once Jadeja broke the stand by bowling out Shanto for 19, everything fell apart for the Tigers as they lost four wickets in three runs to go from 91-3 to 94-7.
Shadman fell to Akash for 50, while Jadeja removed Liton Das and Shakib Al Hasan for one and 0 respectively. Mushfiqur Rahim and Mehedi Hasan Miraz could add just 24 runs together before the latter got caught behind off Bumrah for nine.
Taijul Islam was trapped LBW by Bumrah, and with just one wicket to go, the morning session got extended by 30 minutes.
Mushfiqur nearly took Bangladesh into the next session, before getting bowled by Bumrah in the final ball of the session.
Shakib, Miraz gone, Bangladesh now eight down
Bangladesh are staring down the barrel of a defeat, as they are now eight down for 118 in their second innings, after losing six wickets so far in the morning session on the final day of the second Test against India at the Green Park Stadium in Kanpur today.
Shakib departed for a duck by giving s simple return catch to Ravindra Jadeja, after skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto (19), Shadman Islam (50) and Liton Das (one) had gotten dismissed in the previous three overs, as Bangladesh went from 91-3 to 94-7, losing four wickets for just three runs.
Mushfiqur Rahim and Mehedi Hasan Miraz, Bangladesh's last recognised batting pair, then added 24 runs together before Jasprit Bumrah returned to the attack and got Miraz caught behind for nine.
Mushfiqur is still unbeaten on 15 and has been joined by Taijul Islam. The visitors are leading by a meagre 66 runs and an India victory now seems like a matter of time.
Shanto, Shadman, Liton gone as Bangladesh in trouble
Bangladesh is falling apart right after the drinks break as skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto, Shadman Islam and Liton Das departed in consecutive overs, leaving Bangladesh six down for 94 in their second innings, leading India by 42 runs in the morning session on the final day of the second Test at the Green Park Stadium in Kanpur today.
Their 55-run fourth wicket stand ended when Shanto lost his leg stump to Ravindra Jadeja after missing the ball completely in his attempt to play a reverse sweep, departing for 19.
Shadman reached his 50 later in the over but could not add to his tally any more as in the next over he edged a delivery from Akash Deep to gully where Yashavi Jaiswal completed the catch.
Jadeja struck again in his following over, getting Liton caught behind for one with a ball that bounced more than the batter had anticipated.
The veterans Mushfiqur Rahim and Shakib Al Hasan are now at the middle, with Bangladesh in a really vulnerable position.
Shadman, Shanto steady ship after Mominul departure
Shadman Islam and skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto have put together a 50 partnership after the early loss of Mominul Haque as Bangladesh are leading India by 35 runs 25 overs into their second innings in the morning session on the final day of the second Test at the Green Park Stadium in Kanpur today.
Shadman, who had resumed on an overnight seven, is batting on 46 and Shato has reached 18 as Bangladesh have 87 runs on the board for the loss of three wickets.
Earlier, Bangladesh lost first innings centurion Mominul in just the third over of the day after resuming on 26-2, trailing by 26 runs. He got caught at leg slip against Ravichandran Ashwin after edging a sweep shot.
The early wicket boosted India's push for victory, but since then Shadman and Shanto have successfully negotiated the first hour of play without any further damage and their fourth wicket partnership is now worth 51.
The Tigers still have a difficult task ahead of them as they need to bat deep into the day if they want to avert a defeat.
