Joty shines as Tigresses close in on WC qualification

Bangladesh skipper Nigar Sultana Joty’s purple patch continued as she scored an unbeaten 59-ball 83, helping the Tigresses to 276-6 -- their highest WODI total -- against Scotland in an ICC Women’s World Cup Qualifier at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore yesterday. Photo: ICC

Bangladesh skipper Nigar Sultana Joty is enjoying the form of her life as yet another blistering 59-ball 83 from the wicketkeeper-batter, alongside fifties from Fargana Hoque and Sharmin Akhter, helped the side to a 34-run victory over Scotland in their third match of the ICC Women's World Cup Qualifier in Lahore on Tuesday.

The victory helped the Tigresses, who remain only the second unbeaten side alongside hosts Pakistan in the tournament, inch closer to qualifying for the World Cup in India later this year.

A win against West Indies in their next game on Thursday will ensure Bangladesh's qualification before they play their final game against Pakistan next Saturday. However, even if they lose their final two matches, the Tigresses have a good chance of qualifying as one of two teams from the six-team competition due to their healthy net run-rate of 1.494.

Thanks to Joty, who struck 11 fours and batted with a strike rate of 140.67, and half-centuries from Fargana (57 off 84 balls) and Sharmin (57 off 79), Bangladesh posted 276 for six -- the Tigresses' highest total in Women's ODI -- before restricting Scotland to 242-9. Bangladesh surpassed their previous highest total of 271 for three against Thailand, scored just a match before.

Left-arm spinner Nahida Akhter stood out with the ball as she took four wickets for 40 runs, while Jannatul Ferdus chipped in with two scalps to make sure the Tigresses keep hold of their 100 percent record in the tournament with two matches to go.

Joty, who smashed her maiden ton in this format (101 off 80 balls) during Bangladesh's opening match in the tournament against Thailand, played a dogged 68-ball 51-run during the Tigresses' record run chase of 236 runs against Ireland in the second game.

It was the only time when Joty scored three successive 50-plus innings in her international career, and with her flamboyant innings against Scotland, the 27-year-old is currently leading the top batters' chart in the tournament with 235 runs at a staggering average of 117.50.

She also possesses the highest strike rate (113.52) in the tournament among the batters who have at least scored 100 runs in the meet so far.
