BCB polls: Voting begins amid little buzz

After months of buildup, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) board of directors' election has begun in Dhaka today, an event full of panache but lacking excitement.

The polls, taking place at Hotel Sonargaon in the capital, began at 10:00am as scheduled and is set to continue till 4:00pm.

In the polls, 157 councillors are set to elect 17 directors from 28 candidates. However, 58 ballots were cast through e-voting last night, leaving 99 councillors to vote in person.

However, as many councillors are boycotting the polls, alleging "government interference", many of the ballots are likely to go uncast.

The incumbent board president Aminul Islam Bulbul, who is also favourite to retain his position, cast his ballot in the morning.

The election is taking place to form the 25-member board of directors that will run the country's most cash-rich sporting body for the next four years.

Six directors from Category 1 (Districts and Divisions) have already been elected unopposed, while the National Sports Council (NSC) will nominate two directors from the councillors.

After the board of directors is elected, the directors are scheduled to sit tonight and elect a board president from among themselves.

Here is a look at the BCB polls so far through the lens of The Daily Star's photojournalist Firoz Ahmed.
