Bangladesh Tigers withdraw participation from unapproved Indian league

Bangladesh Tigers, a team composed of ex-Bangladesh cricketers such as Mohammad Ashraful, Elias Sunny, Mohammed Nazimuddin and Naeem Islam, had flown to India on March 9 to take part in the Asian Legends League, a T20 tournament for retired cricketers.
The team was supposed to start their campaign on March 10 against Indian Royals in Udaipur and then face Afghanistan Pathans at the same venue today.
However, the Bangladesh Tigers took part in neither game and are returning home on orders from the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), which called the team back after the tournament did not get approval from the ICC and the BCCI.
"We were supposed to take part in the Asian Legends League. But the tournament is not officially approved by the ICC. So, we won't be taking part and are returning home," Ashraful, who was supposed to lead the team, told The Daily Star.
Meanwhile, former South Africa batter Herschelle Gibbs, who was hired as coach of the Bangladesh Tigers in the tournament, expressed his frustration on Twitter yesterday, saying that he did not even receive the travel plans for the tournament.
With the Bangladesh Tigers not taking part, the five-team tournament has now effectively become a four-team event, which will conclude with the final on March 18.
