Bangladesh quick Hasan delivers ‘world-class’ 9-101 on County debut
Hasan Mahmud marked his Kent debut in brilliant fashion, claiming career-best match figures of 9-101 to inspire a crushing 140-run victory over Lancashire in the Rothesay County Championship Division Two at Blackpool on Sunday.
Just days after describing his move to English county cricket as a “dream come true”, the Bangladesh pacer delivered a match-winning performance as Kent (19 points) defeated Lancashire (3 points) inside three days.
Defending a daunting target of 424, Kent bowled Lancashire out for 283, with Hasan returning devastating figures of 6-69 in the second innings, taking his first-class scalps to 104 in 35 matches.
Kent had earlier added 332 to their first-innings 178, thanks largely to Chris Benjamin’s 103 and Harry Finch’s 83. For Lancashire, veteran James Anderson claimed 3-45 while George Balderson took 3-65.
Set a record chase, Lancashire were aggressive from the outset but Hasan struck before lunch, removing Harry Singh (15) and Josh Bohannon (26), both caught in the slips.
The hosts briefly recovered through a 104-run stand between Keaton Jennings (61) and Marcus Harris, who remained unbeaten on 91. However, Hasan returned to break the partnership and trigger a collapse. Jennings fell down the leg side before Ben McDermott was run out for a duck.
Hasan then ripped through the middle order. Liam Livingstone, threatening on 47, chopped on against the Bangladesh quick before Joe Moores departed two balls later as Hasan completed his fourth first-class five-wicket haul. Balderson became his sixth victim, caught at third slip, before Kent’s spinners wrapped up the tail.
Kent captain Daniel Bell-Drummond hailed Hasan’s display as “world-class”.
"It's a massive victory against a very good team… Bowling them out today was an exceptional effort because the wicket got a bit flatter even though it was spinning at times.
"Whenever a partnership was building, Hasan came back and got to work, showing great skill and swinging it both ways," said Bell-Drummond.
Hasan is next set to feature against Middlesex at home during the 174th Canterbury Cricket Week from June 19-22 before returning for four more Championship matches in September to conclude the season.
