Bangladesh qualify for ICC Women’s T20 World Cup
Bangladesh secured qualification for the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup following their victory over Thailand and the Netherlands’ win against the USA in Nepal on Wednesday.
Bangladesh continued their unbeaten run with a 39-run win against Thailand in their third Super Six match at Mulpani. With this result, and the Netherlands’ 21-run DLS victory over the USA, Bangladesh confirmed a top-four finish.
Four teams will qualify for the main event to join Australia, hosts England, India, New Zealand, South Africa, West Indies, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. Bangladesh now top the Super Six table with six points and a net run rate of 1.15.
The women in red and green will next travel to Kirtipur to face Scotland on Friday before concluding their campaign against the Netherlands in Mulpani on Sunday.
In the Wednesday’s match, batting first after losing the toss, Bangladesh posted 165 for 8 in 20 overs. Thailand were then restricted to 126 for 8 in reply.
Bangladesh had a shaky start, losing opener Dilara Akter for a golden duck, while Sharmin Akter scored 11. Juwairiya Ferdous and Shobhana Mostary then added a crucial 110-run partnership for the third wicket.
Both batters scored half-centuries. Juwairiya made 56 off 43 balls, including three fours and four sixes, while Shobhana struck 59 off 42 deliveries with nine fours and a six. Ritu Moni added a quick 15 off six balls, but the rest of the lower order made only small contributions.
In the chase, Thailand lost early wickets but resisted through Nathakan Chantham (44), Naruemol Chaiwai (30) and Nannapat Koncharoenkeat (29). No other batter reached double figures.
Marufa Akter led the bowling attack with three wickets, while Ritu Moni and Swarna Akter took two each, and Fahima Khatun claimed one.
