Australia captain Steve Smith has backed Usman Khawaja and Ashton Agar to play the first Test against Bangladesh, Australia based SBS reports.

A 14-man Australia squad is due to arrive tonight in Bangladesh amidst forecasts of rain and thunderstorms.

Smith emphasized Khawaja’s importance to the team this summer before leaving for Dhaka.

"I think Usman's going to be a really big player for us this summer," said the skipper.

"He's done incredibly well in Australia over the last couple of years and it would be good for him to (play) some cricket … he’s chomping at the bit to get out there and I daresay he’ll get his opportunity."

Smith also suggested that he may tinker with his own position in the order. "I’d say if Usman plays he’ll probably bat three and I’ll slot in at four," he said.

Asked if Agar would be picked to partner Nathan Lyon, Smith replied: “He's improved a lot in the last couple of years. He bowled really well up here[Darwin] this week. He's probably going to get his opportunity first up; if that's the way we go.”

Smith Also remarked on the challenge they will be facing in the Bangladesh tour.

They’re a very good side in their own conditions and they’re going to be very challenging," Smith said.

"It will be great for us to get some game time there and play in those conditions, and see what we’ve learnt from India.

"Hopefully the guys have learnt a lot, and we’re able to take that into this tour and have a really successful one."
