Live Updates: Bangladesh 127/3 at stumps

Tamim Iqbal hoisted the last ball of the second day over long-on for six as Bangladesh showed some positive intent, ending the day at 127 for three, trailing South Africa's 496/3 by 369 runs.

The left-hander, who came on to bat at the fall of the third wicket, was on 22 while Mominul Haque had reached 28.

The impetus to the innings was earlier given by Mushfiqur Rahim, who scored an enterprising 57-ball 44. The Bangladesh skipper however lived a charmed life as he was dropped twice at slips off the bowling of Keshav Maharaj.

The two openers -- Liton Das (25) and Imrul Kayes (7) -- had fallen cheaply after South Africa had declared their innings right after Tea. 

5.4, Ban 16/1 - A scorcher of a delivery from Kagiso Rabada makes Imrul Kayes get on his toes but it was still was not enough to counter the pace and the bounce of the delivery. Ball loops up and Aiden Markram takes a simple catch at second slip.

South Africa declare their innings at 496 for the loss of three wickets. Bavuma and skipper du Plessis were batting at 31 and 26 respectively.

142.4, SA 491/3 - Bavuma plays beautifully through backward point. Taskin did not do much wrong there. Ball races away for four.

Bavuma has managed to play himself in. South Africa are edging towards a huge total with skipper du Plessis looking pounce on any bad deliveries from the Bangladesh bowlers.

134.2, SA 473/3 - Mustafizur bangs it in short and du Plessis looks to play the pull shot. Ball misses the bat but hits the helmet of the South African skipper before running away for four.

Bavuma went after Miraz in the 134th over and ball cleared the ropes easily as it flew for six. 

Du Plessis comes in and strikes to back-to-back boundaries off Mustafizur off the third and fourth delivery of the over. There are no demons in this pitch yet. Tragic for Elgar to miss out on what would have been an excellent double century.

130.2, SA SA 445/3 - Mustafizur Rahman bangs it short. No apparent threat in that delivery and Dean Elgar manages to scoop it up in the air. Mominul takes the easiest of catches at mid-wicket. Elgar goes for 199.

Mustafizur Rahman has been introuduced to the attack on the 129th over. It's been another hard day's work for the bowlers. Bangladesh will be hoping that they can make some inroads into the Proteas batting line up.

128.6, SA 440/2 - Mustafizur tries his trademark cutter Bavuma. The youngster doesn't quite read it and chips it up momentarily. No short leg or any othe rfielder in vicinity. Ball falls safely.

Amla's wicket was the 70,000th wicket to fall in Test cricket.

125.1, SA 431/2 - Taskin hits new batsman Bavuma high on the thighs. Bangladesh go up in appeal. No response from umpire on the leg-before wicket appeal. Mushfiqur decides against a review. On replay it proved to be too high.

The runs have slowed down since the departure od Hashim Amla. Temba Bavuma is the new batsman at the crease. He has scored 1 from 26 balls.

117.3, SA 411/3 - Shafiul Islam takes the scalp of Amla first over after lunch. Amla went for the uppish drive and was caught at point.

It's lunch on Day 2 of the first Test between South Africa and Bangladesh. South Africa have continued to pile up the runs in this morning session. They have picked up 113 runs from 27 overs on Day 2. After 117 overs the Proteas are 411/1. Amla is batiing on 137 and Elgar is on 172. Their partnership stands at 215 runs from 376 deliveries.

114.2, SA 402/1 - Amla stands tall and strokes it through the cover region wide off the sweeper at the boundary for four. That brings up the 400 for the Proteas.

108.5, SA 381/1 - Elgar uses the pace of the delivery to cut Taskin away for four through backward point.

Taskin has tried some stuff but the two batsman out their are well set. The ball comes nicely onto the bat. Just enough pace for the batsman to just use the pace of the delivery.

Taskin Ahmed was introduced to the attack on the 105th over and Amla played a rare bad judgement. Amla drove at a full delivery and ball streaked away to the boundary through point and gully.

The Proteas are bringing up milestones thick and fast. The duo out there in the middle have continued their stroke play albeit at a faster rate than day 1 of the Test match.

97.6, SA 332/1 - Elgar hoists one off Mehedi over mid-on for four. Looped up by Mehedi and Elgar takes full advantage.

Amla smashes Mehedi for two boundaries on the 96th over. In the first ball of the over he rocked back and punched it crisply through the cover region. He leans into a classy drive on the third ball of the over and the result was another four. Amla moves to 88 with those boundaries.

94.3, SA 310/1 - Amla guides Mustafizur again through backward point This time the ball was fuller in length but ball races to the boundary for four.

92.3 over, SA 306/1 - Amla rocks back onto the back foot and powers Mustafizur down the backward point area for four.

Mustafizur Rahman and Mehedi Hasan have started the proceedings for Bangladesh and are bowling in tandem. Mustafizur took a maiden on the first over of the day. Mehedi was greeted to the crease with a crisp boundary by Elgar.

On a placid pitch, South Africa posted a commanding 298-1 at stumps on the opening day of the first Test.

Left-handed opener Dean Elgar hit an unbeaten 128 while Hashim Amla struck 68 when the stumps were drawn after 90 overs. Debutant Aiden Markram was the only casualty of the day when he was run out on 97.

The groundmen were hoping for the best in the first day, according to supersport.

When it was suggested to head groundsman Louis Kruger that the wicket looked like 'it might be a bit on the low and slow side', he replied: "There should be some bounce.'

'How much?', he was asked again. "Enough" came the reply. Supersport comically put in their article that the bounce was "Enough to ensure the ball didn't roll towards the batsman, as it turned out."

The wicket hardly offered anything. Neither pace or bounce and later on the spinners did not enjoy bowling in this docile surface. There was some low bounce which suggests that spinners may get some turn out of the roughs later on.
