Islami Andolan rejects polls results
Islami Andolan Bangladesh has rejected the results of City Corporations polls in Barishal and Khulna and boycotted the upcoming city polls in Sylhet and Rajshahi.
The decisions came after the attack on its mayoral candidate Mufti Syed Faizul Karim during the Barishal City Corporation polls.
The Rajshahi and Sylhet polls are scheduled to be held on June 21.
"We are rejecting the results of City Corporations polls in Barishal and Khulna," IAB Ameer Mufti Syed Muhammad Rezaul Karim said at a press conference in the evening.
"The (IAB) candidates will not also take part in the upcoming elections in Sylhet, Rajshahi," he said adding the atmosphere is not ideal for polling.
"We are demanding the resignation of the Chief Election Commissioner," he said.
Mahmudul Hasan, the Islami Andolon Bangladesh nominated mayor candidate for Sylhet city polls, this evening announced his boycott of the election.
He said that he is withdrawing himself from the election as per the party instruction following the attack on IAB's central Nayeb-e-Amir Mufti Fayzul Karim.
He said that he will be informing this decision to the Returning Officer of Sylhet City Polls tomorrow officially in writing.
Mufti Faizul and several supporters were injured in an attack allegedly by ruling party men during the Barishal City Corporation polls this afternoon.
Faizul alleged that supporters of Abul Khair Abdullah, the Awami League candidate, attacked them as he came out of the Sabera Khatun Girl's High School polling centre.
However, AL said they did not carry out the attack.
Meanwhile, the party held a demonstration in Dhaka, protesting the attack on the party leaders and activists including the mayoral candidate.
