Rohingya ‘robber’ killed in Cox’s Bazar 'gunfight'

A Rohingya man alleged to be a robber was killed in a "gunfight" with police in Teknaf upazila of Cox's Bazar early today.

The deceased Habib Ullah alias Habiran, 40, son of Ali Ahmed, was a resident of Teknaf's Nayapara Mochoni Rohingya refugee camp in Hnila union, our Cox's Bazar correspondent reports quoting police.

Pradip Kumar Das, officer-in-charge (OC) of Taknaf Police Station claimed that law enforcers arrested Habib along with firearms from Hnila union in an anti-narcotics drive.

Gleaning information from Habib that huge arms and ammunition were secretly kept at Mochani Hill, police conducted a drive in the area at 1:00am, accompanied by Habib.

Sensing the presence of the law enforcers, Habib's cohorts opened fire triggering a gunfight, the OC said.

Sub-Inspectors (SI) Sujit Dey and Moshiur Rahman sustained bullet injuries in the incident, claimed OC Pradip.

Later, police recovered bullet-hit Habib from the spot and sent him to Cox's Bazar Zila Sadar Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries, said the OC.

Police recovered two light guns and 10 rounds of bullets from the spot.

The body was kept at the hospital for autopsy, he said.

Two cases were filed with the police station in connection with the incident.
