JS adopts condolence motion over Chawkbazar tragedy
The Jatiya Sangsad today unanimously adopted a condolence motion expressing profound grief over the victims of Chawkbazar inferno that claimed 67 lives on Wednesday at Churihatta area of Old Dhaka.
Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury presided over the sitting of parliament session and moved the condolence motion at the beginning of today's session.
Shirin Sharmin also prayed for the eternal salvation of the departed souls and expressed sympathy to the bereaved family members.
She sought early recovery of the injured victims as well.
Earlier today, the speaker talked to the victims, their relatives and the doctors and gave directives to the concerned physicians to ensure the proper treatment of the injured while she visited the Chawkbazar fire victims at the burn unit of Dhaka Medical College and Hospital at noon.
The conditions of most of the victims have been stated critical, she said while talking to the reporters after her visit.
However, the doctors are doing their best while Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is closely monitoring their treatment initiatives, Shirin Sharmin added.
Local lawmaker Haji Salim, Bangladesh Medical Association (BMA) President Dr Mostafa Jalal Mohiuddin, DMCH's Burn and Plastic Surgery Unit Coordinator Dr Samanta Lal Sen, among others, accompanied her.
A devastating fire broke out at Old Dhaka’s Chawkbazar area around 10:40pm on February 20, leaving 67 people dead on the spot.
The Chawkbazar fire, which sparked from a chemical warehouse, is the second deadliest chemical-fueled fire in the country after the 2010 Nimtoli incident.
