Oyasiqur murder suspects on 8-day remand

A Dhaka court today placed the two suspects arrested over the brutal murder of blogger Oyasiqur Rahman in eight-day remand under police custody.

Today, Mizanur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Tejgaon industrial area Police Station, produced the two madrasa students before the court seeking to take them under 10-day remand.

Metropolitan Magistrate Younus Khan granted eight-day remand for Zikurullah, a Hathazari madrasa student, and Ariful Islam, one of Dhaka's Darul Ulum madrasa, after hearing.

Monirul Islam, joint commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, told at a press conference held at DMP media centre today afternoon that they sought for 10-day remand for the two suspects as primary interrogation could not produce enough information.

The motive behind the murder was "ideological differences", he added.

Earlier, blogger and online activist Oyasiqur Rahman Babu, 27, was brutally hacked to death by three cleaver-wielding youths on his way to office in the capital's Tejgaon Industrial area in broad daylight yesterday.

Two of the attackers were caught by the public and handed over to police. Both madrasa students, they confessed to the killing during primary interrogation.
