Youth arrested over rape of mentally and visually impaired girl in Patuakhali

Police have arrested a teenager accused of raping a 14-year-old girl with mental and visual challenged in Bauphal upazila of Patuakhali last night.

The accused, Sabbir Khan, 19, of Uttar Rajnagar village, was produced before court today and sent to jail, said Bauphal Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Sirajul Islam.

According to the case filed by the victim’s mother, the incident occurred sometime between March 5 and March 30 when the girl went to a neighbour’s garden in search of her younger brother. Taking advantage of the secluded spot, Sabbir allegedly raped her.

A medical examination later confirmed that the girl is three months pregnant. When questioned by her family, she disclosed that Sabbir had sexually assaulted her.

Police arrested Sabbir last night following the case filing. He, however, has denied involvement in the incident.

OC Sirajul Islam said the matter is being investigated with utmost seriousness. The victim has been admitted to Patuakhali Medical College Hospital for further examination and care.
