CID arrests fake manpower brokers

Criminal Investigation Department (CID) on Tuesday arrested nine manpower brokers from Khilkhet area in Dhaka for blackmailing and embezzling money from job-seekers.

The arrestees were identified as Shariful Islam alias Sajib, 38, Golam Mostafa alias Kamal, 50, Mokhlesur Rahman, 40, Ashadul Haque, 38, Altaf Hossain alias Razib, 38, Asaduzzaman alias Aziz, 29, Jahangir Alam,32, Abdul Kader Sarkar alias Nurunnabi, 40, and Abul Kalam Azad alias Bullet, 43.

Police seized 24 passports, including nine with fake visas, 10 fake demand letters of different countries and a total of Tk 7.95 lakhs from them, Enamul Kabir, special superintendent of CID (DMP South) said in a press briefing yesterday.

“They took Tk 20 lakhs from seven job-seekers,” Enamul said, allegedly by making false promises of jobs abroad.

They made fake visas and issued counterfeit smart ID cards as well, and then blackmailed the job-seeker for more money, the police official also said.   

Tipped off, a team of CID conducted a raid at the fourth floor of a six-storey building in Nikunja-2 area and arrested the nine brokers, who ran an  agency named “Sheba”.

A case was filed with Khilkhet Police Station in this connection.
